Featured | Crafting A Green World & a little bit about price

Thanks to Jackie for showing us some love on Crafting A Green World.

People are obviously excited about our price point- and indeed, it's something for us to be proud of. We know organic cottons are expensive and we know this is the number one reason people don't generally buy them. Often times, organic goods are wide- 54" and up to 110"- which means you're getting significantly more fabric in that yard as opposed to the narrow 44'-45" widths. However, we found that most quilters and crafters - and retailers - prefer the typical 44-45" wide goods for a few reasons, including: it's what they are used to and it's all they "need". On the latter point, this is just a perceived notion, as one can simply order less of the wider goods if they did not "need" that much fabric. As merchandizers, though, we understood that this perception was somewhat powerful and that we needed to meet the expectations in order to forge ahead into this category.

At Cloud9 Fabrics we aim to bring organics to the craft/quilting market... and for us, that means delivering the product most people are accustomed to- this helps ease the transition of a new idea and creates a more appealing price point, helping to make organic cotton fabric a viable consideration for that next project.

PS- if you read this article, you will note a posted comment from Harmony Susalla of Harmony Art, who points out the pricing on their 110" goods.

  1. Very well thought out and compared to what other organic cottons are going for your prices are great. Congrats on the feature!

  2. You are absolutely right Michelle! I know first hand how tied fabric stores are to 45" goods. I am sure this is a good move and will allow easier acceptance. I wish you ALL THE BEST!!!

  3. Congrats on the article! I think something that might make wider goods more accessible for quilters is perhaps a conversion chart for patterns. I think that some people may have trouble estimating yardage and that puts them off, but if it were easier...just a suggestion for the future!
